TYPOLOGY OF EMISSIONS
- Scope 1: direct greenhouse gas emissions from the direct combustion of fossil fuels by the organisation within its boundaries.
- Scope 2: indirect greenhouse gas emissions from the use of electricity, heat and steam imported and consumed by the organisation within its boundaries.
- Scope 3: indirect emissions related to upstream and downstream operations, calculated according to the GHG Protocol and in line with SBTi requirements.
NET ZERO AT 2040
Absolute emission reduction of at least 90% compared to 2018 for Scopes 1+2+3.
Targets approved by Science Based Targets initiative for Scopes 1+2+3
PIRELLI: SCIENCE-BASED TARGETS INITIATIVE VALIDATES THE GOAL OF NET ZERO BY 2040, THE MOST CHALLENGING AMONG TYRE MAKERS
CARBON NEUTRALITY AT 2030
Absolute emission reduction of 80% compared to 2018 for Scopes 1+2 and compensation of remaining emissions.
Target in line with ISO 14068 standard for Scopes 1+2
ELECTRIFICATION OF CURING PRESSES
By 2030, 75% of vulcanization presses worldwide will be electrified, including 100% of those in Europe.
DECARBONISATION PROGRAMME
Pirelli's decarbonisation path involves the use of the best available method for offsetting residual emissions
PRODUCT
BIO-BASED AND RECYCLED MATERIALS
Bio-based & recycled materials are substitutes for fossil and mineral-based materials.
Recycled materials are those derived from the conversion of waste, reducing the use of virgin materials.
Pirelli will use over 70% of bio-based and recycled materials by 2025 in its best product available on the market. With the ambition of reaching 100% of bio-based and recylcled materials by 2040, in its best product available on the market.
NATURAL RUBBER IN TYRES
Natural rubber represents the following percentage of the tyre's total weight:
- about 16% in tyres for the BMW X5 xDrive45e Plug-In Hybrid (world's first tyres with FSC™-certified natural rubber, produced in 2021 in Rome, Georgia, US);
- about 15% in Formula 1® and car tyres;
- about 23% in the P ZeroTM Race TLR RS;
- about 17% in GT/DTM championship tyres.
EUROPEAN TYRE LABEL
Extra EU labelling scales are converted to EU labelling grades.
Performance and targets relating to Pirelli products refer to consumer tyres and are therefore to be compared, where relevant, only to targets relating to consumer tyres and not to other tyre categories or production segment consolidations.
ROLLING RESISTANCE
It is the force the tyre opposes to movement. The greater the rolling resistance of the tyres, the more fuel or energy is required to move the car.
WET GRIP
Wet grip’ is the tyre’s ability to stick to the road in wet conditions. Ensuring safety is a crucial aspect: adherence and control of vehicles on a wet, slippery road is a frequent necessity.
Safety on a wet road is rated in the label in terms of "wet grip". The test to grade the tyre is performed by launching a vehicle on a wet surface: the shorter the distance for completely stopping the vehicle when the brake pedal is fully pushed, the best the class in the tyre label.
TYRE WEAR
The targets and methodology are subject to change once the official UNECE testing method for abrasion in real driving conditions is released.
PEOPLE
ACCIDENT FREQUENCY INDEX
Number of accidents at work per million hours worked.
The formula adopted to calculate the index value is the following:
Frequency Index(FI): ∑( Fatalities + Serious lost time injuries + Lost time injuries ) x 1.000.000/ worked hours
SUSTAINABLE ENGAGEMENT INDEX
The index measuring the level of employee engagement and involvement.
Weighted average of staff and operatives Sustainable Engagement index resulting from surveys of the last two years - 2024 Index is composed by: 85% for operatives in 2023 + 80% in 2024 for staff.
