Motorsport technology in consumer tyres
Car and moto competitions drive innovation in design, modeling, materials, processes and testing.
Pirelli’s presence in motorsports started in 1907 and the company has
long believed that the experience it gains in this arena is beneficial
to its research and development activities.
The company currently supports some 460 car and motorcycle sport events, and this is driving innovation in design, modelling, materials, processes and testing.
One example comes from its role as exclusive tyre supplier to the Formula One™ World Championship. Pirelli first developed coloured tyres as a way for spectators of Formula 1™ to see which tyres drivers were using. Now it has been able to introduce the Color Edition for everyone, giving customers the option of coloured tyres in more than 3,000 Pantone™ colours.
The data it compiles from its experiences on the track can be used for the development of road products, while it can also apply the kind of complex adherence simulation models and quality-control processes developed for competitions.
